I really wanted to reply to your column and only this forum seemed available... I have found your column to be full of insight and thank you for the effort you expend to raise awareness of important issues.

I agree with your comments that burning the American flag is an issue of free speech and not one of abuse.

However, abuse of the American flag is rampant, though I am sure it is unintentional. I am referring to the businesses and people who fly the American flag during inclement weather (rain, snow, and worse) or leave it out overnight, every night.

My family took a vacation to a northeastern state (the most northeastern) and I was dismayed by all the flags which were flying in tatters, overnight, in the rain (it rained everyday but one).

Where is the pride in our country and its flag?

I do not like the political position our country is in currently, but I have learned that ours is the best government so far. People Ive met from other countries may find our society to be very different and baffling at times, but they have all agreed that our system of government promotes liberty and freedom.

So, as the 4th of July approaches, why are we so upset by a very, very few burning flags while countless millions of our flags are mistreated daily?

Have Americans forgotten how to care for their country?
